Donald Trump Energy Independence – A Solar Renewable Strategy
As a result of the Donald Trump Presidential victory this week, many in the Renewable Energy industry are worried about the likely changes coming to their business, and rightfully so. A divided America has elected a Climate Change Denier who believes all the scientists are wrong, that Human activity is not a cause, and that it is all a Chinese hoax to undermine US manufacturing. Be very afraid.
The Sun did however rise on Wednesday morning, as it will continue to do despite changes to the POTUS. People will still have power and heat for their homes. Changes in US Leadership will alter the Energy mix. I think we have seen “Peak Solar PV and Wind” in 2016 as Trump takes actions to remove support for Renewable Energy.
Renewable Energy Strategy After The Trump Win
The morning following the Trump win I received a few phone calls from savvy companies that prepared a capital and talent flight plan to take their business to Canada. The California company had already felt the freeze effect on business leading up to the election. Purchase decisions were postponed pending the election results. As bad as that freeze was, the Trump win spells it will get worse and the thaw is nowhere insight. Canada can benefit from the flight of US capital and talent if Leadership is astute.
Sustainable Cleantech is still an excellent opportunity and is poised for explosive growth in Canada. In the Energy race, if the US was the Hare and Canada the Tortoise, the Hare is going to lay down and the Tortoise needs to keep plodding forward to win. Trudeau needs to stay the course, the parable is true.
Peak Solar PV is actually a good thing for Renewable Heating in US and Canada. The coming slow down shakes up the status quo for decision makers to consider innovations, like SunPump, that they were too busy to pay attention to before. It is a compelling fact that Renewable Heating is 82% of the Home energy pie, while Power is only 18% – according to Natural Resources Canada. The potential is 450% greater for Heating than Power. A stall in Solar PV and Wind is an opportunity for Solar Heat Pumps and Energy Efficiency in general to come out of the Solar shadows. Trump’s Government wants Energy Independence, and the low-hanging fruit is to build Zero Energy Ready Homes that conserve energy, with a small Renewable Heating package to provide the minimal space heating and hot water needs. This is coming, get ready.

What Are Trump’s Energy Promises?
The following promises are quoted in whole from the Donald J Trump website.
Here is my 100-day action plan:
We’re going to rescind all the job-destroying Obama executive actions including the Climate Action Plan and the Waters of the U.S. rule.
We’re going to save the coal industry and other industries threatened by Hillary Clinton’s extremist agenda.
I’m going to ask Trans Canada to renew its permit application for the Keystone Pipeline.
We’re going to lift moratoriums on energy production in federal areas
We’re going to revoke policies that impose unwarranted restrictions on new drilling technologies. These technologies create millions of jobs with a smaller footprint than ever before.
We’re going to cancel the Paris Climate Agreement and stop all payments of U.S. tax dollars to U.N. global warming programs.
Any regulation that is outdated, unnecessary, bad for workers, or contrary to the national interest will be scrapped. We will also eliminate duplication, provide regulatory certainty, and trust local officials and local residents.
Any future regulation will go through a simple test: is this regulation good for the American worker? If it doesn’t pass this test, the rule will not be approved.
How Has President Elect Trump’s Energy Policy Changed?
The following is a quote from Donald Trump Energy Independence website now he has the 2017 mandate.
“Rather than continuing the current path to undermine and block America’s fossil fuel producers, the Trump Administration will encourage the production of these resources by opening onshore and offshore leasing on federal lands and waters. We will streamline the permitting process for all energy projects, including the billions of dollars in projects held up by President Obama, and rescind the job-destroying executive actions under his Administration. We will end the war on coal, and rescind the coal mining lease moratorium, the excessive Interior Department stream rule, and conduct a top-down review of all anti-coal regulations issued by the Obama Administration. We will eliminate the highly invasive “Waters of the US” rule, and scrap the $5 trillion dollar Obama-Clinton Climate Action Plan and the Clean Power Plan and prevent these unilateral plans from increasing monthly electric bills by double-digits without any measurable effect on Earth’s climate.”
In a Forbes article on President Elect Donald Trump Energy Policy the following paragraph summarized the key expected changes we can expect.
The most important effect of a Trump Presidency is that United States climate change policy and goals will evaporate, as will the Clean Power Plan, the Paris accords, any teeth in the Environmental Protection Agency, and any hope of a carbon tax. There will also be no opposition from the Feds to pipeline construction or drilling on public lands and wildlife areas.
Where Do Solar PV Companies Go From Here?
If you are still drinking Solar PV Kool-Aid then disaster awaits. Change is inevitable, and success goes to those who adapt appropriately. When President Donald Trump removes the Solar Panels from the White House, it is a statement that your business is in trouble. Think back to Jimmy Carter then Ronald Reagan – renewable energy died in the 1980’s. SunPump Solar is interested to hear from Renewable Energy principals and Investors on your opinions and plans. There is no doubt the storm is coming, we are confident we can see the silver lining and will thrive in the President Trump Energy period.
