Solar panels stop working when covered by snow, however SunPump panels can continue to function under a moderate snow fall because of the infrared energy absorbed by black aluminum through a few inches of snow. Customers have shared pictures of their PV and SunPump panels covered by snow, and unlike the PV that stops working for days, SunPump panels have continued to produce – even at night. Thick snow will degrade the performance, and can be countered by using the heat pump defrost called Hybrid Mode, (like a freezer), to melt thin ice. In high snow areas we recommend a steep mounting angle or vertical mounting on a wall to avoid snow accumulation as the best option.
