Donald Trump Energy Independence – A Solar Renewable Strategy

November 11th, 2016|Tags: , |

As a result of the Donald Trump Presidential victory this week, many in the Renewable Energy industry are worried about the likely changes coming to their business, and rightfully so. A divided America has elected a Climate Change Denier who believes all the scientists are wrong, that Human activity is not a cause, and that it is all a Chinese hoax to undermine US manufacturing. Be very afraid. The Sun did however rise on Wednesday morning, as it will continue to do despite changes to the POTUS. People will still have power and heat for [...]

Is Natural Gas Reduction for Home heating Making Progress in BC

October 2nd, 2016|

After a decade on inaction, and continued expansion of Shale (Natural) Gas it is difficult to see the clean transition is underway. Canada has committed to responsible reduction of Green House Gas to keep Climate Change under 2-degrees C. Most Provinces are trying to upgrade GHG mitigation policy for one of the largest sources of CO2 emissions - heating buildings. The Ontario Climate Action Plan is a model for other Provinces to tackle the orderly phase-out of Natural Gas because it aligns targeted plans with realistic actions. The time for talking, delays, and studies has passed. Kudos [...]

Solar Thermal Power From China To Antarctica

May 31st, 2016|

Solar thermal power has been a key member of the renewable energy industry for years now, far outshining solar PV in terms of efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Taking the solar thermal industry as a whole, the main uses of solar thermal power are space and hot water heating (for homeowners and businesses) and, on a more industrial scale, electricity generation. It's funny then, that when I have a conversation about renewable energy outside of the office, unless people have an active interest in solar power they tend not to think about solar thermal very much at all. It's not as well known or [...]

Solar Thermal Energy A ‘Complete’ Fuel Solution

May 30th, 2016|

No-one can question that solar PV has become the face of the solar industry worldwide. The advantage of solar PV is the same as the advantage of the electricity it generates - it's flexible. You can stick a handful of solar panels on virtually any roof anywhere, and the system will start ticking away, quietly offsetting the bills you pay for taking power from the grid. If you need more power, just add more panels to your roof - simple. Solar PV power plants take this arrangement to the next level, grouping hundreds of panels together in order to [...]

Renewable Energy Industry Employment At New High

May 27th, 2016|

Record numbers of people are now employed in the renewable energy industry, a new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has claimed. The report, Renewable Energy and Jobs – Annual Review 2016, was released this week, and shows a global increase in employment of 5% over last year to a global total of over 8.1 million. A further 1.3 million people are estimated to work in the large hydro sector. “The continued job growth in the renewable energy sector is significant because it stands in contrast to trends across the energy sector. This increase is being driven [...]

Canadian Clean Tech Grows And Calls For Support

May 26th, 2016|

If you tried to think of a Canadian industry that had more firms (774) than Canada's aerospace industry (700), employed more people than the Canada's forestry and pharmaceutical industries, and was growing at four times the pace of the overall national economy up until just a couple of years ago, Canadian clean tech probably wouldn't be your first thought. “It’s the silent industry in Canada; we’re not even aware that this industry spends almost as much in R&D as the auto industry, or the aerospace industry.” - Audrey Mascarenhas, CEO of Questor Technology Inc. The recently published 2016 Canadian Clean Technology [...]

Energy Independence At Home Is A Great Feeling

May 25th, 2016|

Energy independence is something you tend hear when talking about whole countries and their efforts to stop importing so much oil. However, for decades individual homeowners have been getting in on the act too, reducing the amount of fossil fuel they burn and/or electricity they pull from the grid. The idea is simple; to replace these external sources of energy with renewable energy that is generated on-site at the home itself. Now, while there are more than a few homeowners out there that attempt total energy independence, most aim for something a little more achievable. Simply reducing the [...]

Solar Panels More Efficient Than Ever

May 24th, 2016|

Solar panels are the beating heart of virtually every solar energy system out there, and it's important that they work proficiently. Whether you're talking about a SunPump for home and hot water heating or a full-scale solar power plant for generating electricity, the efficiency of the solar panels used will largely define the efficiency of the system as a whole. The ideal solar panel would convert 100% of the solar energy it absorbs into heat or electricity. Of course, as anyone familiar with solar power will tell you, 100% efficiency is a lot easier said than done. In fact, [...]

Global Temperature Records Broken Again In April

May 20th, 2016|

Global temperature records continue to be broken on a monthly basis, with this past April now officially the hottest April on record. April was 1.10°C (1.98°F) warmer than the 20th-century average for April of 13.7°C (56.7°F) and 0.28°C (0.50°F) above the previous record for April, set in 2010. This marks seven months in a row where the respective monthly temperature record has been broken. All seven months were least 1°C above the recent historical mean for that month, signalling a definite pattern of change in recent times. Furthermore, the final three months of this hot streak broke their [...]

Ontario Climate Plan To Change Province Forever

May 16th, 2016|Tags: |

Ontario Climate Plan: A $7 billion climate plan will bring sweeping changes to Ontario, tipping the scales away from fossil fuel and towards clean, renewable sources of energy. The plan, unveiled today by an exclusive in The Globe And Mail, would fundamentally change how Ontarians consume and create energy on a day-to-day basis. "We are on the cusp of a once-in-a-lifetime transformation. It’s a transformation of how we look at our planet and the impact we have on it. It’s a transformation that will forever change how we live, work, play and move." - Ontario Premier [...]

How To Estimate Solar Heating Savings

May 5th, 2016|

In a perfect world, if you were buying a new solar heating system you could look on the manufacturer's website and read: "Solar heating savings: our system will save you $500 per year and pay for itself after 6 years." Of course, things aren't that simple. This is because figuring out how much a new heating system will save you compared to your old system mostly depends on factors specific to you and your home. Someone with an especially inefficient, outdated heating system will usually see big savings on their bills after upgrading, while someone with a very [...]

Five Advantages of Solar Heat Pumps

May 4th, 2016|Tags: |

Solar heat pumps are high-efficiency home heating systems that have left energy enthusiasts dumbfounded that nobody invented them sooner. Solar heat pumps combine two proven technologies together (solar thermal panels and a heat pump), creating a home heating system greater than the sum of its parts. Most people are familiar with solar thermal panels (they capture heat from the sun for space or hot water heating), and even if you've never heard of a heat pump, you probably have at least one in your home right now. It's the same technology that keeps your fridge cold (only run in reverse here), [...]

For homeowners, businesses, contractors and builders, it's an exciting time to be involved with solar heating. Solar hybrids have changed the game when it comes to home heating, offering homeowners a clean, efficient and cost-effective heating system. But things haven't always been this way for solar heating. It's not so long ago that solar heating was highly expensive, with home heating systems taking years (even decades) to pay for themselves. There were also basic performance issues in play that created real barriers for solar heating. Most importantly of all was the question of how to heat [...]

Energuide Rating System and Home Heating

April 12th, 2016|

Many of you may already be familiar with Canada's Energuide rating system for homes. It's essentially a government operated rating system that determines how energy efficient your home is. It's a great resource, and something that is still probably underused by homeowners here in Canada. Back in my home country of Ireland, we have a similar evaluation system, albeit with one major change; if you're selling your home, preforming an energy evaluation is mandatory. As with here in Canada, the Irish housing market is a mixture of new, high efficiency homes and older, draughty buildings with [...]
